Chapter 7

Coop hit the floor hard. Springing to his feet, he searched for Devyn. “Wait! I can explain!” he shouted as she bolted for the door.

“Stay away from me!” She reached into her purse, and his eyes widened when she pointed a large knife at him.

“Where the hell did you get a machete?! And why is it in your purse?!”

“What the hell are you?!”

“Answer me first! Where the hell did you get a machete?!”

“It was a gift! You never know what creeps are out here! I’m always prepared!” He cocked his head to the side. “Who gets someone a machete as a gift?”

“Don’t you dare judge my friend. I’ll have you know it’s one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. Trixie can be very thoughtful … wait, what am I saying?! What the hell are you?!”

Coop was flustered by the situation but attempted to reason with her, “Look, I know this is a lot to process, but please, just let me explain.” He warily stepped toward her, but in his panic,

his head collided with a hanging lamp, and he fell sideways into the bedroom wall where his left horn became lodged.

"Ow!" he cried out miserably. He could see Devyn taking a few steps back. “H-hang on! Please, Devyn, don’t go!” Freeing himself from the drywall, and leaving shattered plaster in his wake, he stumbled backward, tripping over himself and bumping his hoof against the nightstand. He grabbed his sore hoof and wailed in pain. “Fucking hell!” Struggling to stand again, only to step on his long tail, Coop emitted a sharp yelp of pain, “Ow! Ow! Dammit!”

Unable to combat any more catastrophic falls or injuries, Coop crashed onto his bed and let out an exhausted huff. “Oh forget it," he huffed, "At this rate, you won’t have to decapitate me. Just give me another minute, and my clumsiness will do it for you.”

Devyn took one look at the pout on his animal-like face and saw Coop right through it. Unable to hold it in, she dropped the machete and her laughter filled the air. The entire situation was utterly ridiculous. Each part of the damaged room made her laugh until she couldn’t breathe. Wiping her teary eyes, she laughed harder when she realized his pout had turned into a scowl. “I have no idea what's going on, but that was pure comedy. I’m terrified, but I have to stay and hear this now,” she said.

“It is not funny," he shouted, irritated. "I could have really hurt myself.” His sulkiness, despite his stature, only succeeded in tickling Devyn's funny bone further.

“Your head almost touches the ceiling," she chortled, "and yet here you are, getting your butt handed to you by your own house. I’m sorry, but it's pretty hilarious.” Taking a breath, she cast him a gentle look.

Coop’s eyes softened. “You don’t have to be afraid of me," he said quietly. "I may look a little different, but I'm still me.”

“Still you," Devyn repeated softly. Studying him for a moment,
